Be Careful....
As with any product and service available, there is a wide price range which may be directly related to the quality you receive. Many of us(myself included) have purchased something based on price, only to find out that it is not up to our quality standards. Synthetic golf turf installations are no different.
A synthetic turf installation is, in most cases, a major investment and a focal point of your property. It MUST be installed using the best possible products and installation practices--DO NOT ACCEPT ANYTHING LESS! From the subbase to the final top-dressing, every product and installation step must be of the highest quality and standard.
As a PGA Apprentice and a low handicap player, Dave Sadlowsky, has the highest expectations when it comes to the quality and the realistic look and feel of synthetic surfaces.
Two of the best comments we've received are....
"Is that real grass"
"Mommy, I want grass like this in our yard."
When comparing synthetic products and services, make sure to get samples of the turf. Also, it is very important to see a sample section of turf that is completely in-filled and top dressed to it's final playing condition. If possible, ask to see the installer's show green or another installation. This will allow you to check the quality of the installation and try it out.
Some of the things to watch for:
- Cheap turf has few fibers per square inch and thin backing that can puncture and tear.
- A "lumpy" surface may be a sign of improper subbase preparation.
- Cups should not creep above the surface of the green.
- If improper sand is used to in-fill and top dress the turf, it will become very hard causing the green to become very fast and unable to accept chip/approach shots.
- Seams in the turf should not be easily visible.
- Turf should be in-filled evenly.
As stated above, your synthetic turf installation is an investement and will certainly add value to your property. Don't settle for less, or you will be sure to end up with a liability instead of an investment. There is some junk out there--please be careful.
